Individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder often have significant insight into the disproportionate fear and anxiety they experience in social situations. The most common and most easily recognizable social anxiety disorder is fear of public speaking. Most people have some anxiety about speaking in public, while individuals with this performance related social anxiety disorder may have very intense almost disabling ability to speak in front of other people.
Some of the treatments available for social anxiety disorder include both psychological treatments and medication. Psychological treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation therapy and the use of exposure treatment.

Medications treatments include the use of depression medications such as the SSRIs, and anxiety medication such as Xanax and Klonopin. If people experience panic attacks in conjunction with social anxiety disorder, they may also be given the specifier with panic attacks, which should be added to the actual diagnosis. Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others. Examples include social interactions such as having a conversation, meeting unfamiliar people, being observed eating or drinking, and performing in front of others such as giving a speech.

Educating your child about the ways in which anxiety impacts thinking and behavior is a powerful lesson in learning to work through negative emotions. The purpose of the present article is to apply these leading models to the experience of social anxiety for people who stutter. Components from existing models were applied to stuttering in order to determine cognitive-behavioral processes that occur before, during, and after social-evaluative situations, which may increase the likelihood of stuttering-related social fears persisting.
Maintenance of social anxiety in stuttering may be influenced by a host of interrelated factors, including fear of negative evaluation, negative social-evaluative cognitions, attentional biases, self-focused attention, safety behaviors, and anticipatory and postevent processing. Given the chronic nature of social anxiety disorder, identifying factors that contribute to the persistence of stuttering-related social fears has the potential to inform clinical practice and the development of psychological treatment programs to address the speech and psychological needs of people who stutter with social anxiety.
